Description
Freeport LNG is developing a fourth natural gas liquefaction unit that will add to the three trains already in commercial operation. This expansion will allow for the export of an additional 5+ mtpa of LNG, increasing Freeport LNG’s total export capability to more than 20 mtpa of LNG per year.
Approvals have been obtained from a number of regulatory agencies including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the lead regulatory agency responsible for permitting LNG facilities, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the agency responsible for authorizing exports of LNG. Additional approvals have been obtained from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality along with several other federal, state and local agencies.
In May 2019, Freeport LNG received an order from FERC authorizing the Train 4 Project.
Like the first three trains, Train 4 will use electric motors with variable frequency drive for the cooling and liquefaction compression power, resulting in negligible incremental emissions. The Train 4 Project will be constructed approximate to the first three trains on Quintana Island and adjacent to the first three pretreatment units at the Pretreatment Facility near Oyster Creek.
