Fertiglobe to own stake in Baytown blue ammonia facility

Fertiglobe will own a stake in ExxonMobil’s Baytown blue hydrogen and ammonia facility when it starts operations.

Abu Dhabi-based Fertiglobe, a global distributor of urea and ammonia products, will own a stake in ExxonMobil’s Baytown blue hydrogen and ammonia facility when it starts operations in 2029.

Fertiglobe was recently acquired by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which also owns a 35% stake in the Baytown project. Fertiglobe will also consolidate ADNOC’s other low-carbon ammonia projects in the UAE, representing a consolidation of ADNOC’s existing and further projects.

The consolidation into Fertiglobe will take place at cost, and will more than double its net ammonia capacity by adding 2.4 mtpa to its current capacity of 1.6 mtpa. Its total capacity of net ammonia and urea combined will climb to 9 mtpa.

ADNOC also owns stakes in two other low-carbon ammonia projects in the UAE, including an existing 1 mtpa project under construction, where its ownership is set to almost double, and an additional 1 mtpa project in the pre-FEED stage.

The asset moves position Fertiglobe as the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia producer, El-Hoshy added.

The Baytown project is a 1 mtpa low-carbon ammonia project, where Mitsubishi, JERA Co., and Air Liquide are also involved as equity owners, offtakers, or project partners. It is expected to reach FID early next year.
