Description
JERA and ConocoPhillips were developing a manufacturing base in the US Gulf Coast that would have produced hydrogen on a large scale and converted it into ammonia. Plans for the plant were canceled in September 2024 following a pre-FEED study.
“Our view is that the nascent lower-carbon hydrogen/ammonia market has not developed at the pace required to support further investment,” Conoco said in the statement. “This decision reflects the company’s strategy to apply capital and resources in a disciplined manner.”
The companies were aiming to start commercial production at the end of the 2020s at a plant with an initial production capacity of approximately 2 million tons per year.
JERA, in cooperation with ConocoPhillips, had signed an MOU, announced on September 5, 2022, with Uniper for the procurement and sale of low-carbon hydrogen/ammonia produced in US.
