Description

A carbon sequestration hub east of Edmonton, Canada, to service Alberta’s industrial heartland region providing permanent subsurface carbon storage for industrial users, in an open-access hub format.

Atlas would permanently store CO2 in a porous rock formation called the Basal Cambrian Sands – located about 2 km underground.

The project would be built in phases. The first phase would permanently store 800,000 tonnes of CO2 per year captured by the Polaris carbon capture project from the Shell Scotford Refinery and Chemicals plant near Fort Saskatchewan.

The Atlas Hub would be anchored by CO2 volumes from the Shell Polaris carbon capture project and the ATCO-Suncor clean hydrogen project.

The ATCO-Suncor project is expected to generate more than 300,000 tonnes per year of clean hydrogen and Atlas’ carbon sequestration capabilities would help ensure the capture of more than 95% of the carbon emissions generated in the hydrogen production process.
