Description
A biofuels plant in Ontonagon, Michigan. The plant is expected to use waste wood as feedstock to produce drop-in renewable biofuel.
SynSel Energy, Inc., is partnering with a U.S.-based financier and Lost Bowl Development, LLC, to develop the $300m biorefinery at the site of the closed Smurfit-Stone Paper Mill in Ontonagon.
The Smurfit-Stone Paper Mill closed in 2010.
The site was approved for funding and construction in September 2015.
In 2018, construction funding increased from $300 million to $400 million, and the construction schedule changed from 3 to 4 years. Due to the increased budget and schedule, the project is pulled from underwriting by the construction financier.
In 2022, SynSel executes a loan contract with a lender for funding of the Ontonagon plant.
