Description
Tenaska is developing a carbon capture and storage project in South Alabama.
CO2 emissions from facilities in the area would be captured and transported to geologically secure underground storage locations in Mobile County.
Tenaska’s base facility has a 5 million metric tons per year storage capacity, and it includes the necessary pipeline infrastructure to bring the CO2 in.
Tenaska’s base facility costs $500m, with variations according to land position, site geology, and required pipeline miles.
The project submitted its Class VI application to the U.S. EPA in May 2023. Tenaska expects to start operations in 2026. The hub will be operational from 2026 until 2056.
Tenaska’s hub is part of a project awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management in January 2024. It allows for $17.9 million in funding to support the characterization and permitting efforts to develop a carbon capture and storage hub near Bucks, Alabama. In addition to Tenaska, the project team includes the Southern States Energy Board (award recipient), Advanced Resources International, Crescent Resource Innovation, ENTECH Strategies, the Geological Survey of Alabama, the University of South Alabama, and Williams.
