Description
The Prairie Horizon Energy Solutions was a potential clean hydrogen and clean ammonia production facility paired with carbon dioxide capture, transport and sequestration, and long-term H2 subsurface storage in Stark County, North Dakota. Marathon Petroleum and TC Energy shelved the project in August 2024.
Partners were exploring the feasibility of installing 200 metric tons/day of clean hydrogen (carbon intensity of <0.45 kg CO2eq/kg H2) and up to ~1,150 tpd of clean ammonia production capacity, with an additional investment to construct a urea production facility.
EPC Contract Execution through commercial operations date was estimated May 2026 through December 2028.
The project cost was about $1.8 bn for hydrogen and ammonia production and $0.4B for urea production. It would have been subsidized with a $125,000,000 forgivable loan from Clean Sustainable Energy Authority.
The facility was associated with the Heartland Hydrogen Hub.
