Description
The conversion of Vertex Energy’s refinery in Mobile, Alabama, into a renewable diesel facility. In May 2024, Vertex announced it was reversing the facility’s conversion back to conventional fuels amid macroeconomic headwinds that led to weaker results for renewable diesel. In September 2024, Vertex filed for Chapter 11 protection.
The project had a $115m capex. It included converting a standalone unit within the refinery to facilitate the production of renewable diesel. It became operational in 2023.
The primary feedstock is soybean oil. The facility has been engineered to use other organic waste oils as well.
Vertex acquired the refinery from Shell in 2022.
