Description

Nutrien suspended the project in August 2023, due to higher expected capital costs of between 10 – 15% along with uncertain end-market demand. The project was initially supposed to reach a final investment decision in 2023, with construction beginning in 2024 and full production expected in 2027.  The facility had a $2 billion capex and an annual production capacity of 1.2 mmt/year.

The plant would have used auto thermal reforming technology to achieve a low carbon footprint.

Nutrien has signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate with Mitsubishi Corporation for offtake of up to 40 percent of expected production from the plant to deliver to the Asian fuel market, including Japan, once construction is complete.

In April 2024, PCS Nitrogen, a Nutrien’s subsidiary, filed an application to construct a clean ammonia facility in Geismar, Louisiana.
