Alberta-Pacific Biorefinery

Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries produces a range of sustainable and biodegradable products such as paper pulp products, renewable energies, and bio-methanol products. Wood pulping is the bio-methanol source.

Enerkem Alberta Biofuels

Enerkem Alberta Biofuels is a commercial biorefinery that converts non-recyclable household garbage into biofuels and renewable chemicals. It is located in Edmonton, Canada and it was developed with the City of Edmonton. In 2016, the facility obtained certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system for the manufacturing of bio-methanol.

Nauticol Energy Net-Zero Blue Methanol Project

The Grande Prairie Nauticol Energy Blue Methanol project was to produce 3.4 million metric tonnes of blue methanol annually. The project, which was announced in 2018 and would have been operational in 2025, was canceled on February 7, 2023. A smaller facility could be planned on the site in the future.

Joffre Viking Unit

A commercial CO2 flood for enhanced oil recovery development that injects CO2 deep underground to increase oil production from a crude oil reservoir. The Joffre Unit is located in central Alberta, Canada. The injection scheme takes waste CO2 from the NovaChemicals Ethylene and Polyethylene production facility. Injections began in 1984, and the Joffre Unit has… Continue reading Joffre Viking Unit

Athabasca Leismer CCS

The Athabasca Leismer CCS project plans to capture 440,000 tpa of CO2 in two phases. The CCS project is on a once-through steam generator (thermal oil operations). The Athabasca Leismer project has received significant financial support from the Alberta government through Emission Reduction Alberta’s Carbon Kickstart Grant and is expected to be fully eligible for… Continue reading Athabasca Leismer CCS

Glacier CCS Project Phase 1a

A post-combustion carbon capture and storage project at the Glacier Gas Plant in Alberta, Canada. The Glacier project captures CO2 from the exhaust of a natural gas-fired reciprocating engine, with a CO2 concentration of 5.5%. The project’s first carbon injection into permanent geological storage occurred in August 2022, signaling the completion of Phase 1a. The… Continue reading Glacier CCS Project Phase 1a

Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex

A carbon capture & sequestration, and blue power complex at Pieridae’s Caroline, Alberta facility. The complex will have the ability to sequester up to three million tonnes of CO2 annually into one of the Caroline Facility’s depleted gas reservoirs. This amount of carbon captured equals the annual emissions from the Pieridae’s Goldboro LNG Facility. Over… Continue reading Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex

Hydrogen Canada | Blue Ammonia project

Hydrogen Canada is a blue hydrogen development company in Alberta with aiming to produce 300 metric tonnes per day of hydrogen to export hydrogen to Asian markets. “Blue” hydrogen is a hydrogen produced from natural gas with associated CO2 byproduct captured. Hydrogen Canada aims to capture more than 90% of the CO2 byproduct and sequester… Continue reading Hydrogen Canada | Blue Ammonia project

Wolf Midstream Sequestration Hub

A potential carbon sequestration hub in the Fort Saskatchewan area, east of Edmonton, in Alberta. The hub would use existing infrastructure by connecting to Alberta Carbon Trunk Line system. The sequestration hub would serve large facilities in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland that are seeking CO₂ sequestration solutions. Initial hub volumes are expected to be between two… Continue reading Wolf Midstream Sequestration Hub

The Origins Project

A carbon sequestration hub south of Edmonton, Alberta. The Origins Project is envisioned as an open-access CO2 sequestration hub. It will be connected to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line. It is expected to manage CO2 from hard-to-abate industries, like cement, power generation and petrochemicals that exist along Alberta’s Highway 2 Corridor — including the Alberta… Continue reading The Origins Project
